In-Class Work Sheet

Open the document below and save a copy to your H drive. We will complete this work sheet in class.

Creating Keyword Searches

Write down your topic in the form of a statement. For example: Outsourcing jobs to foreign countries hurts the U.S. economy.

Pick out the keywords in your question. Example:

Outsourcing jobs

United States

Economy

Think of related words: For example, the word "impact" is probably a better term to search than the word "hurt."

"unemployment" is a term that is related to "economy," but may yield specific information about loss of  jobs.

    Class Goals

At the end of the library session, you should be able to:

    1. Turn your topic into effective keywords
    2. Find a book using WorldCat
    3. Find an article in the Opposing Viewpoints database
    4. Find a newspapers article in the Lexis-Nexis database
