ENL001 Basic English: Finding Websites

This guide was designed to help ENL001 students to find books, articles, and websites for their research assignments.

How to Find Websites

Use Google's Advanced Search to limit your search results to websites that are only from .gov and .edu domain websites, and you should find more reliable information than you can get from many .com websites. Just type site:.gov or site:.edu.

How to Find Articles in Wikipedia

You will often find a Wikipedia article within the first few results of your Google search, or just search at
http://www.wikipedia.org.

When to Use Wikipedia or Other Websites

When you have an unfamiliar topic, a web search or an article in Wikipedia can help you find keywords and terms to use in databases or in the library catalog. Don't forget to ask your instructor if there are any objections to using Wikipedia for this purpose, or if there are some kinds of websites you are not permitted to use.
