Grey Literature in Nursing: Conference Proceedings

What is a conference proceeding?

A collection of academic papers published in the context of an academic conference or workshop. Conference proceedings typically contain the contributions made by researchers at the conference. They are the written record of the work that is presented to fellow researchers. In many fields, they are published as supplements to academic journals; in some, they are considered the main dissemination route; in others they may be considered grey literature. They are usually distributed in printed or electronic volumes, either before the conference opens or after it has closed.

Conference proceedings include:
  • Conference abstracts, posters, and published proceedings that are published and distributed through professional societies, associations, or commercial publishers
  • Some level of peer review, as the professional organization typically invites and vets the speakers

What is the value of conference proceedings?

  • Places to search for ideas and themes
  • Ways to identify experts within the field
  • Encompass global perspectives and voices
  • Present both practical applications and theoretical discussions
  • Provide updates to research
  • Examine all results, not just positive findings
