Goals for Today

By the end of class today, you should have:

1. a better understanding of annotated bibliographies and where to find resources to help you write them.

2. ideas on how to broaden or narrow your research topic and use the proper resources to help find supporting materials for your topic.

3. at least 2 relevant references on your topic.

Your Assignments

The purpose of this guide is to help you in completing your assignments for this class. The in-class session will focus primarily on two of your assignments, but the skills learned today should help you with all of your assignments in this and future classes.

Assignments

  • What do you want to know more about? What topics of disability interest you? What group/culture/minority within the disability culture do you want to know more about? Develop a thesis question you want to research and learn more about. Then write an introduction about what you want to learn, why it is important or interesting to you and how you would apply this new knowledge to your future career in Human Services. It should be one to two paragraphs long and reflect the topic of your hypothetical paper and the question you are trying to answer through your research. I am not asking you to tell me something with the thesis. The intention is not to prove what you know but to show what you are hoping to learn should you peruse this research someday.
  • An annotated bibliography is a list of citations to books, articles and documents. Each citation is followed by a brief (about 150 words) descriptive paragraph, the annotation. The purpose of the annotation is to inform the reader of the relevance, accuracy, and quality of the sources cited. The paragraph should include the author's point of view, the central themes and scope of the article, the intended audience, and an explanation of how this work illuminates your topic. You need to find 3 sources and document them followed by an annotation.
