Dr. Welch Workshop: About "The Dr. Welch Workshop"

Guide to library and internet resources for the Dr. Welch Workshop makerspace

Dr. Marshall D. Welch, Jr.

Dr. Welch

The Dr. Welch Workshop gifted in loving memory of Dr. Marshall Welch, Jr.

A well-respected member of the Williamsport community, Dr. Welch attended Gettysburg College and received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Dentistry. After serving in the U.S. Navy, he opened his orthodontic practice in Williamsport in 1958, providing care to the patients of his hometown for nearly 50 years. His love for Williamsport was evident in the philanthropic support that he shared so graciously with organizations, charities and educational institutions throughout the community.

An avid outdoorsman and pilot, Dr. Welch was also adept with woodworking and metal fabrication. He and his friends built experimental aircraft, rebuilt Jeeps, designed furniture and fixed whatever was broken. Much of this work – from trial-and-error concept to finished execution – occurred in his two-story workshop, which consumed what was once the family’s backyard. It was a place where wisdom and camaraderie were dispensed in equal measure, and where everyone was welcome.

The Dr. Welch Workshop: A Makerspace at Penn College, is made possible through the generous support of donors who believe in our mission to provide a comprehensive, applied technology education that empowers graduates for success in the global marketplace.
