Making Connections with Your Past: Local Resources

Genealogical and family history resources from Lycoming County (and beyond) to help students build and maintain relationships with family back home, and possibly develop an interest in family history. Is the past in your future?
There are only a few classes at Penn College to which genealogy or family history have any relevance, so there are few resources available at Madigan Library: primarily books listed on the "Books" page (above). The best sources for local information are at the James V. Brown Library and the Lycoming County Genealogical Society Library at the Thomas T. Taber Museum. Both libraries, however, have many online resources available on their websites, which can be accessed at the Madigan Library. Some of these resources will require a membership or a library card.

The Lycoming County Genealogical Society Library is housed at the Lycoming County Historical Society's Thomas T. Taber Museum (858 W. 4th Street, Williamsport, PA 17701; 570-326-3326). The library is open 12pm-4pm Tuesday-Friday. Visit them online and email them at LycomingLineage@gmail.com. Many research tools have recently been made available to the public at no cost; check them out at https://lycominglineage.wixstudio.io/lycominglineage/research-tools. For membership information, go to https://lycominglineage.wixstudio.io/lycominglineage/become-a-member. Volunteers are welcome.

The James V. Brown Library is located at 19 E. 4th Street in Williamsport, PA (17701; 570-326-0536). Find them online at https://jvbrown.edu. Their online resources include local newspaper archives - some with remote access, others onsite only; digitized photos, images, and historical documents, and, under "Resources for Adults", access to MyHeritage Library Edition (a competitor to Ancestry.com, offered remotely) and Family Search, a product of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints - some of its features are for in-library use only.
