Physics: Associations, Institutes and Societies

The AAPM is a scientific and professional organization, founded in 1958, composed of more than 7000 scientists whose clinical practice is dedicated to ensuring accuracy, safety and quality in the use of radiation in medical procedures such as medical imaging and radiation therapy. We are generally known as medical physicists and are uniquely positioned across medical specialties due to our responsibility to connect the physician to the patient through the use of radiation producing technology in both diagnosing and treating people. The responsibility of the medical physicist is to assure that the radiation prescribed in imaging and radiation therapy is delivered accurately and safely.

AAPT is a strong professional physics science society dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in physical science education.

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit membership corporation created for the purpose of promoting the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its application to human welfare. It is the mission of the Institute to serve the sciences of physics and astronomy by serving its member societies, by serving individual scientists, and by serving students and the general public.

The American Physical Society strives to: be the leading voice for physics and an authoritative source of physics information for the advancement of physics and the benefit of humanity; provide effective programs in support of the physics community and the conduct of physics; collaborate with national scientific societies for the advancement of science, science education and the science community; cooperate with international physics societies to promote physics, to support physicists worldwide and to foster international collaboration; promote an active, engaged and diverse membership, and support the activities of its units and members.

The EPS provides a European forum for physicists representing national, scientific, and topical interest. Together, they elaborate the strategic vision for the EPS, and for the European physics community. The current strategic priorities include scientific issues such as promoting scientific excellence, physics is profession, physics education, public awareness and communication, and European integration and physics for development.

The Institute of Physics is a scientific charity devoted to increasing the practice, understanding and application of physics.

The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) was established in 1922 in Brussels with 13 Member countries and the first General Assembly was held in 1923 in Paris. The aims of the Union are: to stimulate and promote international cooperation in physics; to sponsor suitable international meetings and to assist organizing committees; to foster the preparation and the publication of abstracts of papers and tables of physical constants; to promote international agreements on other use of symbols, units, nomenclature and standards; to foster free circulation of scientists; to encourage research and education.
