Health Social Work: HIV/AIDS

AIDS.gov provides access to Federal HIV/AIDS information through a variety of new media channels, and supports the use of new media tools by Federal and community partners to improve domestic HIV programs serving minority and other communities most at-risk for, or living with, HIV.

HIVinfo is a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) project that offers the latest federally approved information on HIV/AIDS clinical research, treatment and prevention, and medical practice guidelines for people living with HIV/AIDS, their families and friends, health care providers, scientists, and researchers.

This program seeks to foster a synergistic approach to research on mental health issues of HIV infection. Its goal is to encourage the application of multiple scientific perspectives and approaches to stimulate inter- and multidisciplinary collaboration and coordination. NIMH AIDS Research Centers are broadly based investigative endeavors, encompassing or supporting research in a variety of areas, including biological, biomedical, behavioral, neuroscience, prevention, clinical sciences, and services research.

The CDC National Prevention Information Network (NPIN) is the U.S. reference and referral service for information on HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and tuberculosis (TB). NPIN collects, catalogs, processes, and electronically disseminates materials and information on HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, STDs, and TB to organizations and people working in those disease fields in international, national, state, and local settings. All NPIN services are designed to facilitate sharing of information and resources on education and prevention services, published materials, research findings, and trends among users.

The Division of AIDS Research (DAR) supports research to reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS worldwide and to decrease the burden of living with HIV/AIDS. DAR-supported research encompasses a broad range of studies that includes basic and clinical neuroscience of HIV infection to understand and alleviate the consequences of HIV infection of the central nervous system (CNS), and basic and applied behavioral science to prevent new HIV infections and limit morbidity and mortality among those infected. DAR places a high priority on interdisciplinary research across multiple populations, including racial and ethnic minorities, over the lifespan.

The National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention maximizes public health and safety nationally and internationally through the elimination, prevention, and control of disease, disability, and death caused by HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STDs and TB.

Supports a global research portfolio to advance biological knowledge of HIV/AIDS, its related co-infections, and co-morbidities.

As a key implementer of the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), USAID’s Office of HIV/AIDS provides global leadership to maximize the impact of the Agency’s overall response to combat the epidemic. USAID supports country-led efforts to combat the complex challenges of HIV/AIDS in over 50 countries around the world.

The HIV/AIDS Department provides evidence-based, technical support to WHO Member States to help them scale up treatment, care and prevention services as well as drugs and diagnostics supply to ensure a comprehensive and sustainable response to HIV/AIDS.
