Resources for your research proposal, critique, and poster presentation.

Search Tips

  • Use quotation marks around phrases, e.g. "health care" (except in PubMed)
  • Use an asterisk to truncate search words, e.g., gerontolog* = gerontology, gerontological, gerontologist, etc.
  • Use AND to connect keywords and phrases, e.g., "health care" AND elderly
  • Use synonyms to see if you get different results, e.g. elderly, geriatric, old, senior, aged, etc.

Tips for finding evidence-based research articles:

  • Use the Advanced Search feature
  • Enter "this study""case study", or "pilot study" (including quotation marks) in one of the search boxes
  • Check the box next to Peer Reviewed
  • Limit the Methodology to:
    • Clinical Case Study
    • Empirical Study
    • Qualitative Study
    • Quantitative Study

Use the limit options to filter citations for systematic reviews, meta-analyses, reviews of clinical trials, evidence-based medicine, consensus development conferences, and guidelines.

  • Do not use quotation marks when searching PubMed; this turns off ATM (automatic term mapping)
  • After a search, use the left-hand sidebar to filter results by Article type (clinical trial, randomized controlled trial, etc.)
  • Use the Advanced search to narrow your topic further. e.g. find an article with your keywords in a Title/Abstract (All Fields)
  • Add nursing[mh] to the search box followed by AND plus your search terms to limit results to nursing articles, e.g., nursing[mh] AND prenatal care

  • After a search, use the drop-down menus at the top to filter results by category and scope (broad or narrow)
  • Categories include:
    • Etiology (causes of disease or contributing factors of disease)
    • Diagnosis (sensitivity, accuracy, etc. regarding a diagnostic test)
    • Therapy (effectiveness, cost, etc. regarding treatments)
    • Prognosis (course of the disease over time, expected complications, etc.)
    • Clinical Prediction Guides (prediction of some aspect of a disease or condition and have been advocated as a mechanism for enhancing clinical judgement; clinical prediction studies develop or validate rules, guides, indexes, equations, scales, scores or models to predict a diagnosis, prognosis, risk (etiology), therapeutic response, therapeutic drug level or clinical outcome)
