Tips for finding evidence-based research articles written by a nurse within the last 5 years:

  • Enter keywords/phrases in the search box pertaining to your topic, then consider adding any/all of the following:
    • nurs* will return results that include at least one word that begins with nurs (e.g., nurse, nurses, nursing, etc.)
    • "this study" OR "case study" OR "pilot study" copying/pasting this entire string, including the quotation marks, will help narrow your results to a research study
  • Check the box next to Any Author is Nurse
  • Check the box next to Peer Reviewed
  • Check the radio button next to Past 5 years under Published Date

You can also limit your search by checking the box next to Evidence-Based Practice, or by choosing a specific publication type (Case StudyResearch, etc.).

  • Use the Advanced search feature
  • Enter keywords/phrases in the search box pertaining to your topic, then consider adding any/all of the following:
    • nurs* will return results that include at least one word that begins with nurs (e.g., nurse, nurses, nursing, etc.)
    • "this study" OR "case study" OR "pilot study" copying/pasting this entire string, including the quotation marks, will help narrow your results to a research study
  • Enter RN in one of the search boxes and change Anywhere to Author --- AU
  • Check the box next to Peer reviewed
  • Specify a date range that encompasses the last 5 years

Tips for finding evidence-based research articles written by a nurse within the last 5 years:

  • Add nursing[mh] to the search box followed by AND plus your search terms to limit results to nursing articles, e.g., nursing[mh] AND prenatal care
  • Add nursing credentials (e.g., RN) to your search as a keyword.  In the citation, click on the +Author Information link to possibly view credentials for verification.
  • Search by affiliation [ad]:  nursing, RN, etc.
  • Filter results by Article type (clinical trial, randomized controlled trial, etc.

Find Full-Text

  • Look for links to PDFs in each citation
  • Look for Check for full-text links as they will lead you to either a link to the full-text or a request button for interlibrary loan
  • If you check for full-text and see the request button for interlibrary loan, copy/paste the article title into Google Scholar first as there may be a free PDF available
