Collection Development Plan: Nursing

Nursing Learning Resources Committee

Yearly Library Weeding and Replenishing Process

Fall Semester

October - December
  • Faculty will be reminded to conduct a library catalog search of existing titles for currency.
    • On the Advanced Search page, change keyword to subject and enter nursing as the search term.
    • In the list of results, use the limiters along the left-hand side to get a more specific list (e.g., print books, eBooks, DVDs, etc.).
    • Nursing resources are located in the RT call number range, however other specialty nursing books may be found in other areas (e.g., psychiatric nursing is in RC440).
  • Faculty will be reminded that they will be responsible for requesting resources using the following forms:
    • Library Acquisitions Request Form:  Use this form to request new materials in the library.  Faculty can request periodicals, books, nonprint media, and electronic resources (including databases) to be purchased by the library in support of Penn College programs.
    • Media Conversion Request Form:  Use this form to request media conversion for your class.  Please make requests at least one (1) semester in advance as this process can take several months to complete.  Please also note that digital rights may be cost prohibitive or otherwise unavailable.

Spring Semester

January
  • Faculty will be reminded to conduct a library catalog search of existing titles.  Faculty will be reminded that they will be responsible for requesting new materials through the library.  Remind them that in April we will withdraw anything that is older than five (5) years and not marked a classic title.
March
  • The Nursing & Health Sciences Librarian will send a list of nursing titles that are now six (6) years old.  The list will be routed to the Standard V Committee members only to be marked as keep, weed, or update.
  • Faculty will be reminded to conduct a library catalog search of existing titles including newly acquired titles. Faculty will be reminded that they will be responsible for requesting new materials through the library.  New requests are due to the Nursing & Health Sciences Librarian before March 31.
April
  • Standard V Committee will go to the library and review the collection on an as-needed basis at the request of the Nursing & Health Sciences Librarian.

Upon request, the Nursing & Health Sciences Librarian will furnish fiscal, physical, and technological resource information.  See the Faculty Library Services Guide for more information about the Madigan Library.
