Collection Development Plan: Responsibility & Budget

Responsibility

Each librarian, as well as the Director of the Library, has collection development responsibilities.  Specific responsibilities are to:

  • Stay current on the information needs of the College community;
  • Develop collection development policies and procedures;
  • Develop collections in assigned subject areas;
  • Serve as liaison to faculty in assigned subject areas;
  • Participate in assessment and weeding;
  • Market the library’s collections to the College community.

Although the Director of the Library and faculty librarians are ultimately responsible for the library’s collection, the entire College community is encouraged to recommend additions at any time.

Budget

Although each program area is not allocated a specific amount of money each fiscal year, recommendations for purchase by faculty are given preference.  Faculty and staff planning new courses and new programs are encouraged to contact their school’s librarian.  The library collection’s budget may be periodically adjusted depending on the overall library budget and the needs of the College and individual programs.
