PHO150 Digital Photography: Arnold Newman

In recognition of the career and award-winning work of Arnold Newman, the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institute, will be exhibiting 100 of his portraits of individuals who have made a notable contribution to American culture and society. This book looks at these photographs.

Published to coincide with the centennial of Arnold Newman's birth, Arnold Newman: One Hundred offers a celebratory look at 100 of the photographer's most provocative and memorable images. His environmental approach to portraiture was influenced by symbolism and impressionism, and defined by the imperative of captivating the viewer no matter how well known the subject was.

Featuring 250 photographs by over 150 different artists, this book surveys fine art photography in American throughout the 20th century.

American photography from the turn of the century through the mid-1960s offers one of the richest and most coherent traditions in the history of the medium. This book explores that tradition in depth through superb reproductions of 183 photographs from the outstanding collection of The Museum of Modern Art." Major figures, such as Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Harry Callahan, and Robert Frank, are each represented by six or more photographs. Dozens of other distinguished photographers are included as well, and many remarkable but unfamiliar pictures join the landmark works.

This book features portraits of 50 legendary 20th-century photographers. It is a homage to masters of the art of photography whose work has made history and influenced the art of later generations of photographers.
