Student Evaluation of Library Instruction

Today's Goals

  1. Gain a basic understanding of the library catalog and databases and some tips and tricks to more efficiently search it.
  2. Know where to find resources to help you with citations.
  3. Know where to find physical photography books in the Madigan Library.

Catalog Search Tips

The following tips will help you to search the catalog more efficiently and get the best results:

  • SU: before your search term will ensure your term is a main subject in the results
    • SU: Edward Curtis -> The results will include ONLY books where Curtis is the primary subject, NOT books in which he's briefly mentioned
  • Quotation marks around your search term will search for that EXACT phrase
    • "Edward Curtis" -> The results will include ONLY resources with that exact phrase. Note: For some photographers, this will EXCLUDE pertinent results if they are listed in several ways (e.g. Curtis also shows up under "Edward S. Curtis" and "Edward Sheriff Curtis"
  • If your photographer has a common name, you can add search terms to ensure you're only getting results related to photographers
    • "Robert Frank" AND photo* -> The results will include ONLY resources that are about Robert Frank the photographer. Note: The asterisk serves as a wildcard and will capture all results that begin with photo (e.g. photography, photographer, photos, etc.)
